Mixed Sections Automatic and Normal This Example is one way to having your cake and eating it too.
This layout would allow the engineer to have the track in RED (the MAIN LINES) connected to one "Section Control" while the remaining track is wired as normal DCC. As before if the "Section Control" is OFF the entire layout will function normally. With the "Section Control" ON the engineer could have as few as 2 or as many as 6 trains operating automatically on the "MAIN LINES" and still be staging or operating trains in other areas of the layout. The "Spur BitSwitch" upper right which has one spur in the RED section and one spur in the BLACK section will allow the engineer to remove a train from the Automatic Section at any time without disruption to the other trains on the "MAIN LINES". Likewise the "Merge BitSwitch" at the bottom right will allow the engineer to "Merge" traffic onto the "MAIN LINE" when ever traffic allows. This would be done by simply using the DCC CAB to attempt to enter the "MAIN" The "Merge BitSwitch" would prevent any collision if traffic were present. This layout, when operating with the "MAIN" "Section Control" ON will allow the engineer the assemble new trains and then "Merge" them on to the "MAIN' when ever desired. The engineer may also remove other trains from the "MAIN" as desired.
Reasonable stopping distance is required in each control area just as it would be in prototypical lines. The BitSwitch application is not easily applied to multi-siding switch yards and Normal DCC Engineer control is the only and best solution.
